Adrius Stilia, a traumatized legionnaire, returns to his native region as a veteran and tries to build a life as a grape grower. After a difficult start, life seems to smile at him more and more until the moment he is suspected of a brutal robbery murder.

In the great basilica on Vaticanus, in front of Peter’s tomb, the dying victim called his name. He is forced to travel to Vaticanus to prove his innocence. There he becomes involved in a series of enigmatic murders of which every motive seems to be missing.

Adrius is forced to cooperate with Decanus Grundelo, an arrogant but very clever cleric who is charged with investigating the murders. That investigation brings them to the northern border of the Empire where they find an old brother-in-arms who can help them find the killer and a motive.
